For a third consecutive year in a row, team McLaren has a winning car at Hungarian Grand Prix. It was Kovalainen who won it last year, but the Finn however had to settle for fifth spot this year, while the reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton emulated his 2007 Hungarian Grand Prix win with another shock win in Budapest.
The win very much came from a troubled McLaren team, who had an abysmal season so far. Yes the McLaren team showed promise in the practice rounds, but experts wasn’t expecting much from Hamilton, but he sure showed the critics wrong. Is this a resurgent McLaren team perhaps?
If anything was to indicate the winner from Hungary, the first lap tells it all. After lap one, the positions was Alonso, Webber, Hamilton and Raikkonen. Alonso unfortunately had a loose right front-wheel after his first pit-stop on lap 12, and that ended his podium chase. With that too, FIA has decided to ban Renault from the next event.
McLaren’s MP4-24 isn’t quite the fastest car that day, but Hamilton knew his chances of winning gets better if he has a clean race, and he did exactly that. Hamilton chances indeed got better and better when Webber’s lap 19 pit-stop took longer than it should.
Lewis Hamilton was quoted, “Clearly we’ve made some serious improvements to the car and it’s much better balanced, the car was fantastic, and when the team asked me, I looked after the tyres. And for once I was able to use KERS to my advantage today.”
It was Hamilton’s first win since China last year, and gave him his first podium of the 2009 season, and his first points since Bahrain in April 2008.
Webber second place finish moved him up to second overall within 18.5 points of Button, whose could only manage two points from his seventh place finish. Brawn GP going into the second half of the season is struggling. Button’s main rival on the standing, Vettel (Retired) and Barrichello (10th) failed to score any points.
